The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has urged personnel to make adequate plans for retirement to ensure a smooth transition to civilian life.

AVM Usman Abdullahi, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC), Special Operations Command, Bauchi, said this at the second edition of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) parley with veterans on Saturday in Bauchi.

Represented by AVM Abdullahi Bello, Chief of Staff of the command, Mr Abdullahi commended the NAF for its efforts in preparing personnel for life beyond active service.

“The NAF has done much for us. It is important for personnel to always look outward and plan for their future,” he said.

He assured that all the concerns raised during the meeting would be conveyed to the NAF headquarters for appropriate action.

The AOC said the meeting, an initiative of Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Hasan Abubakar, was designed to honour and appreciate retired personnel.

Mr Abdullahi said the NAF would make the event an annual tradition to strengthen the ties between the service and its veterans, address their welfare needs and encourage continued engagement.

He reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to the welfare of serving and retired personnel. He urged veterans to take advantage of the Air Force medical facilities to access timely and quality healthcare services.

“Feel free to visit the Air Force medical unit. Consult the doctors and nurses for your treatment at any time,” Mr Abdullahi said.

Suleiman Loddo, the Veteran Master Warrant Officer, advocated for the introduction of short courses for personnel approaching retirement, especially those with 10 years or less to serve.

Another veteran, Master Warrant Officer Mahmud Mohammed, called for the establishment of a credit scheme to improve the social and economic well-being of retired service personnel.

He also commended the CAS for the initiative and pledged continued support for the veterans to achieve the set objectives.

Highlights of the event included health talks and discussions on economic sustainability to help the veterans maintain a healthy and secure post-service life.
