Activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi has said that forming a political coalition ahead of the 2027 elections without electoral reforms in place to guarantee free and fair exercise is labouring in vain.

Mr Farotimi, an ally of former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, issued this warning to coalescing politicians in a post on X on Saturday.

“No be INEC go declare 2027?? Na so dem trust Tinubu reach?” Mr Farotimi posted in Pidgin.

“Any coalition without electoral reforms in place shall labour in vain,” Mr Farotimi said, referring the public to his stance on the 2027 election in an interview.

In the interview published on May 7, Mr Farotimi urged opposition politicians to push for electoral reforms, saying that going into the 2027 election without reforms to ensure free and fair elections is “brainless.”

Mr Farotimi’s warning comes days after the coalition of opposition politicians announced the adoption of the African Democratic Congress as its official party to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The coalition includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Mr Obi, and former Senate President David Mark. It announced Mr Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as its national chairman and national secretary, respectively.
