Amnesty International has called for the unconditional release of #EndBadGovernance protesters, adding that President Bola Tinubu government’s treason charge against them is reckless and absurd.

“Amnesty again calls on the Nigerian authorities to release all those detained for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests between 1-10 Aug.

“President Bola Tinubu’s reckless attempts to charge those who protested against widespread poverty with ‘treason’ is beyond absurd,” the human rights organisation said in a tweet on Friday.

This comes after an Abuja division of Federal High Court granted 10 protesters charged with treason bail.

The protests, which took place from August 1 to 10, saw thousands of Nigerians grappling with economic hardship express frustration under Mr Tinubu’s administration.

Amnesty International recorded at least 23 deaths during the protests as Nigerian security agencies opened live rounds on protesters. However, the police denied killing any protester.

Mr Tinubu’s administration has faced mounting criticism for its heavy-handed approach to dissent, charging protesters with treason.
