Entrepreneur advises youths to take up chess for mental alertness

An entrepreneur, Bimbo Fajemirokun, has advised youths to engage in chess, as it builds the mind and equips players with real-life skills.
Mr Fajemirokun said this on Friday in Abuja while reflecting on the recently concluded maiden chess competition for children and youths in Lagos.
The tournament featured over 70 participants, divided into two categories: the higher category with 16 players and the lower category with 54 players.
He noted that the competition, which is expected to be held twice a year, aims to inspire more people to have faith in the country and develop resilience.
“Chess teaches strategic planning and problem-solving—skills that are essential in real life.
“Rather than giving up on Nigeria, we believe there is hope. We need to keep planning and strategising, and soon, our efforts will pay off,” he said.
After six rounds of play, Femi Balogun emerged as the overall champion in the higher category, scoring five points out of six and conceding two draws.
He received a N150,000 cash prize.
Tosin Akinwamide secured second place and won N100,000, while Theophilus Caiafas finished third.
Abiola Adeyemo claimed first place with 5.5 points in the lower category, earning a N100,000 cash prize.
The Best Female Player award ended in a three-way tie between Treasure Nzeako, Victoria Ozemoje, and 10-year-old Zita Agusionu, each receiving N60,000.
Meanwhile, 12-year-old Henry Evbuomwan was recognised as the Best Junior Player, finishing with four points and winning N50,000.
