Centre pledges leadership in mathematics for national development

The Council of the National Mathematical Centre has pledged the centre’s continued commitment to leadership in mathematics and mathematical sciences for national development.
The Council’s Chairperson, Prof. Edna Njoku, stated this during the council’s first quarterly meeting in Abuja on Saturday.
According to her, mathematics is the core and engine of growth and development of any nation.
Mr Njoku said that the centre would continue to play a leading role in the promotion of mathematics for the country to reap from its abundant benefits.
She, however, noted that the centre, established alongside other universities such as the University of Abuja lagged in infrastructural development.
She appealed to the Federal Government to increase investment in the centre for the development of critical infrastructure.
This, she said, would bring the centre to international limelight and attract the best scientists across the world.
She also commended President Bola Tinubu and the minister of education for including the centre in Tertiary Education Trust Fund interventions.
This, she said, would go a long way in improving the academic and infrastructural outlook of the centre.
“This development will transform the centre to a prestigious institute of academic excellence in mathematical sciences,” she added.
The chairperson also said that the centre was long overdue for conversion to a National University of Mathematical Sciences.
She added that doing so would ensure the centre plays its pivotal role in increasing and improving the quality and quantity of manpower in its area of academic specialisation. (NAN)
