Be skilled to attain financial independence, NYSC DG advises corps members

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, has assured corps members that they will not regret participating in camp activities.
According to him, such activities are meant to make them rugged and stand out for future rigours of life.
Mr Ahmed said the regimented camp activities were aimed at instilling discipline in them.
He addressed corps members of the 2024 batch ‘B’ stream ‘Il’ while on a working visit to the Kaduna State NYSC orientation camp on Wednesday.
The director-general said that most of them were used to comfort before being called up for the service.
He reminded them that camps were regimented nationwide, urging them to participate actively in activities within their capacity.
Mr Ahmed stressed that they would also help them to become good leaders in future.
He, however, cautioned the corps members against hiding their medical challenges.
Speaking on participating in the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Department programme, he said, it would be beneficial to them after service, adding that it had produced billionaires.
Mr Ahmed said that the scheme was in partnership with many organisations which give loans to corps members without interest.
He urged them to embrace skills for their financial independence after a year.
Mr Ahmed restated his commitment to the security and welfare of the corps members.
He, however, said the corps members were in the best position to secure themselves if they didn’t undermine their safety, emphasising that the scheme does not deploy to dangerous areas.
Mr Ahmed urged them to avoid night travels and accepting lifts from strangers, while always patronising designated motor parks.
He stated, “The scheme had lost many corps members to night travels. Travelling in day time is easy to save life in unfortunate situations such as accidents.’’.
Mr Ahmed also urged them to impact positively at their places and communities of primary assignment when posted, while also respecting their norms and traditions.
The director-general warned them against flouting the scheme’s social media law.
Mr Ahmed commended the camp commandant and other officials for instilling discipline in the corps members in spite of their large number.
Earlier, the Coordinator of the scheme in the state, Hassan Taura, said that 2,615 corps members comprising 1,976 for the state and 639 for Abuja and the FCT were undergoing orientation in the camp.
He emphasised that the camp community was fully secure, where in spite of some challenges, he said, the corps members exhibited a high sense of discipline.
Mr Taura disclosed that the commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy redeemed his promise of constructing a borehole in the camp, hence reducing water shortage.
He thanked Mr Ahmed for the working visit to the camp while pledging to sustain the standards in all ideal NYSC camp activities.
He pledged four cows to the corps members and ordered that they should have a one-day free of any activity in camp.
Mr Ahmed also doled out cash gifts to the corps members who excelled during a dance presentation.
It was in appreciation of the corps members’ show of regimentation and high sense of discipline.
