Woman seeks dissolution of 31-year-old marriage over irreconcilable differences

A mother of 10, Halima Bala, on Tuesday requested a Shari’a court sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, to dissolve her 31 years old union to one Mustapha Muhammad over irreconcilable differences.
The complainant told the court that she was ready to return the N2,000 she collected from him as dowry to redeem herself from the marriage.
She said, “I can’t live with him anymore because I can’t submit to him which means that I will be disobeying God’s command of a woman to be submissive to her husband.’’
On his part, the defendant, Muhammad, said he cannot remember the exact amount he gave his wife as dowry as he didn’t give it with the intention to collect it back in future.
He prayed court to give him time to try to settle with his wife, saying he would involve family members to intervene.
The judge asked the woman if she had witnesses to confirm the dowry amount and she said it was her parents who were now late.
He adjourned the case to April 28 for the couple to try an out of court settlement and ordered the defendant to go and confirm the exact amount paid for as dowry.
