The Directorate of Road Traffic Service (DRTS) has warned motorists against speeding during the rainy season, citing the increased risk of road traffic crashes.

Yusuf Suberu, FCT squadron leader (Vehicle Inspection Office Mayors of the Federation), said this in an interview on Sunday in Abuja.

Mr Suberu said that speeding was a major contributor to road traffic crashes, and the rainy season only exacerbates the danger. He emphasised that speeding in the rainy season was a recipe for disaster, adding that motorists needed to take caution against such an act.

He added that the VIO Mayors warning against speeding during the rainy season aimed to reduce the number of road traffic crashes and ensure a safe and enjoyable journey for all motorists.

According to him, the roads are slippery, visibility is reduced, and vehicles take longer to stop during rainfall.

“It’s a perfect storm for road traffic crashes,” said Mr Suberu.

He said that many motorists speed during the rainy season due to impatience or a false sense of security.

“Motorists need to understand that speeding in the rain is dangerous. It’s not just about getting to your destination quickly; it’s about arriving alive,” Mr Suberu stressed.

He advised motorists to slow down and exercise caution during the rainy season, especially on highways and major roads. He urged them to reduce their speed, follow the rules and regulations of safety on highways, and avoid sudden movements.

Mr Suberu added, “It’s better to arrive late than to risk your life and the lives of others. Ensure your vehicles are in good condition before embarking on any journey.

“Check your tyres, brakes, and lights before driving. A well-maintained vehicle is essential for safe driving, especially during the rainy season.”
