UPDATE: Seven burnt alive, four injured in Lagos bus accident

Head of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, has confirmed the death of seven persons in Sunday’s bus inferno.

Peoples Gazette had earlier reported that the fire accident occurred Sunday afternoon at Iyana Oworo, inwards Third Mainland Bridge.

Confirming the incident in a statement, Mr Oke-Osanyintolu said that seven persons trapped inside the vehicle were burnt alive while four passengers were rescued by the emergency responders.

He said that three female survivors were taken to the hospital for treatment while a male passenger was treated at the scene by LASAMBUS.

Mr Oke-Osanyintolu said 12 passengers were trapped including the driver of the vehicle who escaped from the scene with some “burns” injuries.

He added that the 14-passenger seats commercial bus with registration number KJA 699 GY was gutted by fire due to recklessness and overspeeding of the driver.

“Upon arrival at the scene, a commercial bus of 14 passenger Mazda with registration number KJA 699 GY was discovered to have been gutted with fire. 

Further investigation gathered at the scene revealed that the incident occurred due to recklessness and overspeeding by the driver which resulted in the fire with 12 passengers trapped,” Mr Oke-Osanyintolu said.

“Fortunately, the driver escaped with some burns, 3 female adults were rescued and  rushed to Gbagada General Hospital while a male adult was attended to by LASAMBUS at the scene. 

“Unfortunately 7 victims were burnt to death (4 female, 2 male adults and 1male child ) in the bus.

All the remains have been bagged by the Agency’s LRT Paramedics, LASAMBUS officials and handed over to SEHMU.

“Arrangements have been made by LASTMA officials at the scene for removal of the burnt vehicle  from the road. 

LRT alongside LRU Paramedics LASTMA, LASAMBUS, SHEMU and NPF are responders at the scene.”
