UNIBEN mourns Edwin Clark, hails his legacy in education

University of Benin (UNIBEN), on Saturday, mourned the elder statesman and iconic leader, Edwin Clark, who died on Feb. 17 at the age of 97.
In a statement by Benedicta Ehanire, the university’s deputy registrar and public relations officer, the Vice Chancellor, Edoba Omoregie, SAN, described Mr Clark’s death as a great loss to Nigeria and the academic community.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Chief E.K. Clark. He was not just a nationalist and patriot but a key figure in the history of the University of Benin,” Mr Omoregie stated.
The VC said Mr Clark, who served as commissioner for education in the defunct Mid-Western region, played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Midwest Institute of Technology, which later evolved into UNIBEN.
He noted that as a federal commissioner, the late Mr Clark also ensured the university’s successful takeover by the federal government, positioning it among the country’s leading institutions.
“His contributions to education were immeasurable. He didn’t just help build UNIBEN, but later went on to establish the Edwin Clark University in Delta State, showcasing his lifelong dedication to learning,” Mr Omoregie said
According to him, beyond education, Mr Clark remained a strong advocate for justice, equity, and national unity throughout his life.
He said the UNIBEN community joined the nation in mourning the statesman, praying for the repose of his soul and strength for his family.
