The U.S. has once again taken a swipe at Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela, berating him as an illegitimate president, leader of a narco-terror organization, and drug pusher indicted in America.

Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, derided the Venezuelan leader in a scathing post on X on Sunday.

“Maduro is NOT the President of Venezuela and his regime is NOT the legitimate government,” Mr Rubio said.

He added, “Maduro is the head of the Cartel de Los Soles, a narco-terror organisation which has taken possession of a country. And he is under indictment for pushing drugs into the United States.”

Mr Rubio’s criticism comes as Venezuela holds municipal elections for hundreds of mayoral and thousands of council positions.

Venezuela’s municipal elections come a day before the one-year anniversary of its last presidential election.

The U.S. has refused to recognise Mr Maduro’s government and has targeted Venezuela with different sanctions since the last election, which it adjudged fraudulent.

In March, Mr Maduro also hit back at Mr Rubio, calling him an “imbecile.”
