Teenager arraigned over alleged theft of gold necklace worth N1.2 million

The police prosecutor said that the defendant stole a gold necklace worth N1.2 million, belonging to a housewife, Saratu Adams, when he visited her.

A teenager Matthew Bako, who allegedly stole a gold necklace worth N1.2 million was on Thursday arraigned in a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant, 19, who lives in Barnawa area of Kaduna, is charged with theft.

He however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 20.

Mr Leo said that the defendant stole a gold necklace worth N1.2 million, belonging to a housewife, Saratu Adams, when he visited her.

Mr Leo said, “The defendant, who is the complainant’s neighbour, usually runs errands for her. During one of his visits to the house, the defendant went into the complainant’s bedroom and stole the gold necklace.’’

Mr Leo further said the defendant who was arrested on Monday, told the police that he sold the necklace for N300,000.

He said the fence contravened the provisions of Section 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200, 000 and two sureties in like sum.

Mr Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must be related to the defendant and must present evidence of three years tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.

He further ordered that the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and adjourned the case until June 25 for hearing.
