Sokoto govt. approves N950 million for completion of 38-megawatt independent power project after 16 years

The Sokoto State government has approved N950 million for the completion of the 38-megawatt Independent Power Project (IPP), which started in 2008.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Sambo Danchadi, disclosed this after the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting on Wednesday in Sokoto.

Mr Danchadi said the IPP project, started by former Governor Aliyu Wammako’s administration in 2008, aimed at providing 24-hour electricity to the state.

He said the project would generate 38 megawatts of electricity when completed, assuring that the project would no doubt rejuvenate social and economic activities across the state.

”The present administration considers it paramount to complete the project in view of the investment made so far and its importance to the citizens of the state,” Mr Danchadi said.

The commissioner also disclosed that the state government has approved N222 million to rehabilitate the Waziri Junansu History Bureau, “which serves as a monument and tourist attraction site in the state.”

He said hostels at Shehu Shagari College of Education and Umaru Aliyu Shinkafi Polytechnic, owned by the state government, would be reconstructed at about N480 million.

Mr Danchadi added that additional vehicles would be procured for the deputy governor’s office and security operatives.

According to him, during the sitting, the council approves a Medium Expenditure Framework (M-TEF) for 2025 to 2027, along with borehole repairs and water treatment supply to the tune of N203 million.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Nasiru Dantsoho, said about N4.7 billion was approved for the construction of road networks in Sultan Maccido School of Arabic and Islamic Studies as well as township roads and roundabouts.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Jabir Maihula, said about N1.9 billion was approved for reconstructing Jumu’at mosques and Islamiyya Schools across the state.

Governor Ahmad Aliyu chaired the SEC sitting.
