Thirty people have been confirmed killed and 100 injured after Russian forces attacked the Kramatorsk train station.

On Friday morning, Ukraine’s state railway company said the attack came as civilians attempted to evacuate to safer parts of the country.

“Two rockets hit Kramatorsk railway station,” Ukrainian Railways said in a statement. “According to operational data, more than 30 people were killed, and more than 100 were wounded in the rocket attack on Kramatorsk railway station.”

The head of the railway company, Oleksandr Kamyshin, called the attack “a deliberate attack on the passenger infrastructure of the railway and the residents of Kramatorsk.”

Russia, however, has denied the attack.

“All statements by representatives of the Kyiv nationalist regime about the ‘rocket attack’ allegedly carried out by Russia on April 8 at the railway station in the city of Kramatorsk are a provocation and are absolutely untrue,” the Russian defence ministry said in a statement on Friday.

The attacks came a day after Russia was suspended from the UN Human Rights Council over mounting evidence that Russian forces killed civilians while retreating from towns near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and other human rights violations.

The suspension is part of other sanctions imposed on Russia.

The sanctions include a ban on coal imports and sanctions against high-profile Russians and two daughters of President Vladimir Putin.
