Referee to wear body camera in Premier League match

Referee Jarred Gillett will wear a video body camera during the Premier League match day 34 fixture between Crystal Palace and Manchester United at Selhurst Park on Monday.
It would be the first time in the history of the English top-flight league that a referee will wear a video camera during a game —Gillett will use a head-mounted device called a ‘RefCam’ during the match.
However, the BBC reported that the device’s footage will not be broadcast live during the game. The one-off programme hopes to provide insights into officiating in the Premier League.
It is similar to the programme trialled in Germany in February when referee Daniel Schlager wore a camera and a microphone during a Bundesliga game between Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg.
The footage captured by Schlager’s camera was used for the ‘Referees Mic’d up—Bundesliga’ programme.
In December 2023, the Football Association (FA) doubled its referee body cameras during match trials after the association recorded encouraging results in the initial phase of the programme.
The FA said the programme is part of actions taken to reduce the level of abuse towards referees from players and managers during matches.
