Lagos: 50-year-old woman in court for N2 million fraud

A 50-year-old woman, Kemi Akala, appeared on Monday before a magistrates’ court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, for allegedly collecting N2,000,000 under false pretences.
Ms Akala is charged with two counts: obtaining by false pretence and felony, specifically stealing. However, she pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Insp Adegeshin Famuyiwa, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on September 26, 2023, at about 4:50 p.m. at No. 5, Simeon Str., Odogunyan area of Ikorodu.
Mr Famuyiwa said the defendant fraudulently collected the money under the pretence of selling a car to one Elvis Ocha, the complainant.
According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene sections 314(1)(3) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Magistrate A.O. Ogbe granted the defendant N500,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
Mr Ogbe adjourned the case till May 30 for mention.
