The police command in Rivers has successfully rescued a heavily pregnant woman from suspected child traffickers at their hideout in Abia.

Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed to journalists that the suspects have been apprehended.

She noted the arrests followed an extensive investigation into a trafficking syndicate operating between Rivers and Abia.

She said detectives extended their investigation to Aba on June 24 and arrested two suspects, Sunshine Hart, 28, and Kingsley Ekocha, 38.

Ms Iringe-Koko said that officers raided the suspects’ hideout and rescued a 24-year-old pregnant woman, Regina Sunday, placing her in protective custody.

“Shortly after being taken into protective custody, on June 30, Regina safely delivered a baby boy at the Police Clinic in Port Harcourt. Both mother and child are currently receiving medical care and are in a stable condition,” she added.

The police spokesperson said police have launched a manhunt for other members of the child trafficking syndicate.

She reaffirmed the command’s commitment to dismantling the network and bringing all involved to justice.

Commissioner Olugbenga Adepoju reaffirmed the command’s dedication to protecting lives and enforcing the law.

“We urge members of the public to continue reporting any suspicious human trafficking activity or intelligence to assist the police in eradicating this menace from our society,” Ms Iringe-Koko appealed.
