Peru’s prime minister resigns amid alleged contract awarded to 25-year-old lover

The prime minister of Peru, Alberto Otárola, has reportedly resigned after audio recordings of him revealing how he attempted to exploit his position to help a woman obtain large government contracts were released.
Mr Otárola, 57, has since denied the allegations of wrongdoing while an investigation has been launched, the BBC on Tuesday reports.
Yaziré Pinedo, 25, is the woman Mr Otárola is heard talking to. The audio files, which were first played over the weekend on the Panorama programme, were said to have shown the two having discussions.
It was said that Ms Pinedo received two contracts in 2023 for work in the Ministry of Defence, totalling 53,000 sol ($14,000; £11,000).
Mr Otárola served as Peru’s defence minister until the end of 2022, after President Dina Boluarte took over the reign of office.
