More than 3,000 flights have been cancelled and 1,000 more delayed in the U.S. due to a violent storm in the southern part of the territory.

This was disclosed on Saturday by an airline and flight-tracking website, FlightAware.

Activities have been disrupted, and many travellers’ flights halted across the country.

Delta Airlines has cancelled over 1,100 flights across its network on Friday as it works to stabilise operations for the weekend, describing the storm as a “worse-than-expected mix of winter weather.”

One of its flights in Atlanta, preparing for takeoff, faced a potentially stressful outcome when an engine issue forced a Boeing 757-300 aircraft to abort takeoff. This resulted in the evacuation of over 200 passengers and crew members through an emergency slide.

Other major airports, including Dallas Fort Worth in Texas and Charlotte Douglas in North Carolina, also experienced significant disruptions.

Earlier this week, the storm was preceded by a winter system, leaving at least five people dead and causing power outages in the central and eastern parts of the country.

Temperatures plunged below zero degrees in some areas, leaving tens of thousands without electricity.
