The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has launched a tree planting campaign in Zamfara to combat increasing effects of climate change and ensure a sustainable environment.

The exercise was flagged-off at the premises of Government Girls Day Secondary School (GGDSS), Bungudu in Bungudu Local Government Area.

Speaking at the event, the NYSC coordinator in Zamfara, Muhammad Ahmed, stated that the initiative was part of the nationwide drive by the commission to protect the environment.

He noted that trees provide a lot of benefits to society, hence the need to encourage planting more for the sake of future generations.

“The primary goal of the scheme is to touch lives, especially at the grassroots. Therefore, launching of this tree planting exercise in Bungudu is a significant step in that direction,” the coordinator said.

In his remarks, the Emir of Bungudu, Hassan Attahiru, thanked the NYSC for the initiative, saying that the project would aid in protecting the community from desert encroachment as well as harmful winds.

Mr Attahiru observed that tree planting exercise would not only benefit the present populace, but also the unborn generation.

While recalling his participation in the scheme in 1984 in Ogun State, the royal father said as a corps member, he travelled out of his state of deployment only once.

The emir stated that the scheme helped him to establish lasting friendships and thanked the NYSC for its continued contribution to national unity and integration.

The NYSC coordinator and his team had earlier paid homage to the emir at his palace at Bungudu, where he officially introduced himself.

The coordinator used the medium to solicit continuous support of the emirate in the welfare and security of corps members serving in the emirate.
