NEMA distributes relief materials to flood victims in Akwa Ibom

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on Saturday, distributed relief materials to victims of the flood disaster in Akwa Ibom.
The intervention is part of the federal government’s special intervention for the 2024 flood in the Uyo, Ibesikpo, Uruan, Nsit Atai, Eastern Obolo, Ikot Abasi, and Mkpat Enin Local Government Areas.
In her remarks, NEMA’s director-general, Zubaida Umar, said the relief materials included 600 bags of rice, 350 cartons of spaghetti, 60 cartons of vegetable oil, 60 cartons of tin tomatoes, 60 cartons of seasoning cubes, and 30 bags of iodised salt.
Ms Umar, represented by Mmandu Aisueni, head of operations in Akwa Ibom, said the gesture was to provide the needed relief to the victims as they rebuild their lives after the flood disaster.
“It is with mixed emotions that we gather here today, saddened by the devastating impact of the recent floods, yet hopeful as we come together to provide much-needed relief to our brothers and sisters
“The effects of the flood have been deeply felt in these communities, disrupting lives and livelihoods and leaving many in urgent need.
“Today, we are distributing these relief items not just as a gesture of support but as a demonstration of our shared humanity and commitment to your recovery,” Ms Umar said.
Ms Umar emphasised that long-term recovery requires collective effort and that the agency would continue to work with stakeholders to ensure everyone’s safety in the area
In their respective remarks, the member representing Uyo Federal Constituency, Rep. Mark Esset, and that of Ikot Abasi, Rep. Uduak Odudoh, lauded the intervention, which they said was a big relief to victims in their respective constituencies.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Godwin Effiong expressed delight over the gesture, saying that the relief materials would help cushion the hardship they are facing.
