Man United retains Erik ten Hag as manager; considers contract extension talks

Dutch coach Erik ten Hag will remain as the manager of Manchester United until the end of the 2024/25 season after the club hierarchy decided to keep him following the completion of an end-of-the-season review.
There was uncertainty over the future of the Dutchman in the build up to the Emirates FA Cup final win over Manchester City in May with some reports suggesting Ten Hag would be sacked following the completion of the season.
United hierarchy had been carrying out their review of the Red Devils’ season and reportedly held talks with ex-Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel and Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna as possible replacements during the process.
Former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, Brentford head coach Thomas Frank and recently departed Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi were also touted as Ten Hag’s successors.
Following the conclusion of the review process led by United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS sporting director Sir Dave Bailsford, the club decided to stick with Ten Hag.
He has won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup in his first two years at the club, making him the second successful manager in England at the moment behind Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola.
According to The Athletic, the club held talks with Ten Hag on Tuesday where both parties agreed to continue together – Ten Hag still has one year left on his contract at the club with an option to extend by a further one year.
The club is now looking to open contract extension negotiations with the 54-year-old’s representatives following preliminary discussions, The Athletic reported.
Both Ten Hag and the club’s hierarchy can now focus on United recruitment plans for the summer transfer market as the Red Devils look to bring in fresh players and sell some as they look to better the eighth place finish next season.
