A Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, has sentenced a drug trafficker, Muphy Afolabi, to a total of two years in prison for peddling 360 grammes of cannabis sativa and eight grams of tramadol.

Delivering judgment, Justice Nkeonye Maha held that she convicted and sentenced Afolabi based on the evidence tendered by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency against him and his guilty plea.

Ms Maha added that she took cognisance of the prayer of the defence counsel that the court should temper justice with mercy in sentencing his client.

She warned Afolabi to keep away from any form of crime after completing his jail term because he might not be lucky if he was arrested again.

Ms Maha said, “Afolabi is hereby, sentenced to one year imprisonment for count one- and one-year imprisonment for count two. However, sentencing shall run concurrently from the date he was first arrested.’’

The defence counsel, Musbau Olapade, had shortly before the judgment pleaded with the court to be lenient in punishing his client.

Mr Olapade said that the convict’s two children, wife and aged mother would suffer if heavy sentence was applied against him.

Earlier, the Prosecuting Counsel, Daniel Otunla, told the court that the convict committed the crime on November 1, 2024, at Sanyo, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Mr Otunla said that Murphy was apprehended by the NDLEA operatives in possession of two bags: one containing 360 grammes of cannabis and the other concealed with eight grammes of tramadol, a psychotropic substance.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened the provision of section 11 (C) of the NDLEA Act Cap n30 law of the Federation 2004.
