Man arraigned for allegedly beating sister-in-law to coma

A 38-year-old man, Clement Simon, who allegedly beat his sister-in-law to a pulp, on Tuesday appeared before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court.
Mr Simon, who resides in Ungwan Boto Kaduna, is charged with assault.
The prosecution counsel, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 2 at his residence.
He said the defendant assaulted his wife’s older sister, Janet Godwin, who visited them to resolve a domestic dispute in the family.
“The defendant and his wife had a misunderstanding. The older sister came over to intervene but was assaulted by her sister’s husband,” he said.
He added that the defendant was arrested and an investigation showed that the defendant always harassed and arbitrarily battered his wife.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N150,000 with one surety in like sum.
Mr Emmanuel said that the surety must be gainfully employed with evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Kaduna State Government
He adjourned the case until March 4 for hearing.
