Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday restated his administration’s commitment to the welfare of pensioners in the state.

Mr Makinde stated this while addressing some pensioners who paid a ‘Thank you’ visit to his office in Ibadan.

The governor, who spoke through his deputy, Bayo Lawal, assured the pensioners that whatever request they demanded through the proper channel would be looked into.

He recalled that his administration met a backlog of N61 billion pension arrears when he assumed office in 2019, saying that the arrears had almost been cleared.

Mr Makinde promised not to owe any arrears at the end of his tenure in 2027.

Mr Makinde, while appreciating the pensioners, noted that the visit was a testimony to the good governance which his administration had been providing for the people of the state.

Earlier in his address, the State Secretary of Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Olusegun Abatan, said that members of the union came to show their appreciation to the governor.

Mr Abatan said that the Makinde-led administration had “resurrected the pensioners’ dead bones and making them liive as human beings..

According to him, the regular payment of monthly pensions and clearance of outstanding gratuities have given pensioners new hope for a longer life.

He commended the governor for approving N25,000 per month for the least paid pensioners in the state as against the N1,000 which they used to get.

Mr Abatan urged the governor not to relent in catering for the welfare of pensioners in the state.
