Aminu Jaji (APC-Zamfara) says autonomy for the local governments in Nigeria will foster accountability and transparency in governance.

This is contained in a statement in Gusau on Saturday by Mr Jaji’s media assistant, Jamilu Iliyasu.

Mr Iliyasu quoted Mr Jaji as stating this on Saturday in Zaria at a public lecture and interactive session organised by the Zamfara State Students’ Association (ZAMSSA), Ahmadu Bello University chapter.

Mr Jaji, who represents Kaura Namoda and Birnin-Magaji Federal Constituency, said the autonomy for LGAs would address local security issues and bolster conflict resolution.

He said, “As the closest tier of government to the people, local governments hold the key to unlocking grassroots development, economic growth, and improved service delivery.

“Local government autonomy refers to the freedom of local governments to manage their affairs, make decisions, and allocate resources without undue interference from other tiers of government.”

The lawmaker said they will explore the importance of local government autonomy, adding, ” We will delve into its benefits, challenges, and successes.”

”We will examine how the local government autonomy can promote economic growth and development, improve service delivery and infrastructure, and enhance community participation and engagement.

“The autonomy for local government in Nigeria will improve service delivery, revenue generation, economic growth and jobs creation,” Mr Jaji said.

The lawmaker further said that autonomy would reduce poverty and inequality, saying, ”autonomy helps address local grievances, reducing poverty and inequality.”

He stated that the autonomy would ensure innovative solutions to local challenges and enable “local governments to invest in local healthcare and education.”

Mr Jaji called on the students to shun the planned nationwide protest, adding that it is not in the country’s best interest.

“Please, don’t allow anyone to use you in the name of protest.

“I acknowledge the hardship being experienced in the country, but our leaders are working round the clock to address it through various interventions. Please shun any calls for protest,” Mr Jaji stated.
