Lagos: Bill to convert 37 LCDAs into LGAs scales second reading in House of Reps

A bill seeking to upgrade the 37 local council development areas in Lagos state to full-fledged local government areas has scaled the second reading at the House of Representatives.
The proposed bill scaled its second reading on Wednesday during a plenary session presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
The bill seeks to increase the total number of LGAs in the state from 20 to 57 and bring the total number of LGAs in Nigeria to 811 from 774.
The proposed legislation is titled “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to Accommodate the Thirty-Seven (37) Development Area Councils of Lagos State as Full-Fledged Local Government Areas, Increasing the Total Number of Local Government Areas in the Federation to Eight Hundred and Eleven (811), and for Related Matters (HB. 1498).”
If passed into law, the state will have the highest number of LGAs in the country, ahead of Kano and Katsina states, which currently have 44 and 34 LGAs, respectively.
The bill, which was among the 42 constitutional amendment bills passed on Wednesday, was jointly sponsored by James Faleke of Ikeja Federal Constituency, Babajimi Benson of Ikorodu Federal Constituency, and Enitan Dolapo Badru of Lagos Island I Federal Constituency, alongside 19 other lawmakers.
