Kaduna unveils flood preparedness project to boost emergency response

The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), in partnership with UNICEF and Christian Aid, has inaugurated a comprehensive project to improve flood preparedness and emergency response.
The initiative, “Strengthening Northwest Nigeria’s Emergency Preparedness and Shock Responsive Social Protection (SRSP),” seeks to bolster the state’s resilience against climate-related disasters through proactive planning and inclusive support systems.
The 13-month project, funded by UNICEF and implemented by Christian Aid, will run from May 2025 to June 2026, targeting key gaps in disaster response and social protection mechanisms in Kaduna.
Speaking during the project introduction meeting in Kaduna, Usman Mazadu, the agency’s executive secretary, said the initiative would build the capacity of relevant institutions and communities to better anticipate, prepare and respond to emergencies.
Mr Mazadu stated that the project aligned with the state’s broader commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations, particularly in the face of climate-related, conflict-induced shocks.
“The objective of this intervention is to enhance the resilience of communities through improved coordination, preparedness, and the deployment of early response mechanisms,” he said.
In his remarks, Ayanle Omar, programme specialist representing UNICEF, described KADSEMA’s coordination efforts and institutional reforms as “commendable,” saying they laid a solid foundation for future disaster management.
Also, Bamidele Fagbite, the senior disaster risk reduction specialist at Christian Aid, praised KADSEMA’s zonal structure for its improved response during recent fuel tanker incidents.
He said the SRSP project would further strengthen the state’s capacity to manage flood risks effectively.
Stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that the initiative would enhance collaboration and build a safer and more resilient state.
