June 12 Annulment: MKO Abiola’s family demands apology from Babangida

The family of late MKO Abiola has demanded an apology from former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), for annulling the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
“We want IBB to apologise and announce the late Abiola as the winner of the 1993 presidential election,” the family said.
Amina Irawo made the demand on behalf of the family at the commemoration of the 2023 Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration at Abiola’s residence in Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday.
The former military head of state had annulled the poll acclaimed to be won by Mr Abiola.
“President Bola Tinubu should declare late Chief MKO Abiola winner and announce him the president-elect of the June 12 presidential election.
“We urge the president to also give the family all late MKO Abiola’s entitlements from June 12, 1993, till date.”
Also, the family asked Mr Tinubu to honour Mr Abiola’s wife, Kudirat, as the first lady of “Hope 93”.
Ms Irawo, a human rights activist, urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to give late MKO Abiola’s house in Lagos a befitting facelift due to a president.
Reacting, Mr Sanwo-Olu, who his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, represented, pledged that the house would be taken care of.
