Italy’s Alice D’Amato wins gold in gymnastics over Biles’ silver medal at Olympics

Italy’s Alice D’Amato clinched the gold medal in the women’s balance beam artistic gymnastics event after half of the competitors including America’s Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles fell and missed the podium.
The 21-year-old was in disbelief as she scored 14.366 points to finish top of the podium, becoming the first Italian woman to win an Olympic medal on the balance beam – or any individual event for that matter.
China’s Zhou Yaqin posted a 14.100 to win the silver medal while D’Amato’s teammate Manila Espositowas third with 14.000 to win bronze, completing an Italian 1-3 podium finish.
Alongside Biles and Chiles, Sunisa Lee as well as others fell from the beam, and gave advantage to D’Amato, Zhou and Manila to secure the medals.
It is the first time that Italy has won an Olympic title in gymnastics in any event – male or female – since Athens 2004, when Igor Cassina claimed gold on the horizontal bar.
Meanwhile, after finishing fifth in the balance beam event, Biles concluded her Olympic campaign with silver in the women’s floor exercise final while Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade won the gold medal.
The 25-year-old Brazilian posted a score of 14.166 to seal a 0.033 score win over Biles who posted 14.133 while Chiles also recovered from the fall in the balance beam final to secure bronze in the floor exercise.
In what could be her last Olympics, Biles finished the Paris Games with three gold medals and one silver medal. She has now won a whopping 11 Olympic medals in total which include seven gold, two silver and two bronze.
