Israel-Hamas war: United Nations approves aid resolution for Gaza

The latest resolution does not call for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas but is calling to “create the conditions” for one.

After days of negotiations, the United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution which is aimed at bringing more aid to Gaza, where the Hamas-run government said more than 20,000 people have been killed.

There were fears prior to the vote after the United States, an ally of Israel, raised “widespread concerns” about the earlier draft of the resolution and abstained from the final vote alongside Russia.

Earlier this month, 13 of the 15 members of the Security Council had voted for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, but the resolution was vetoed by the United States.

The resolution was approved “for reasons known to all; this draft resolution has made quite a number of adjustments,” the representative of China said while speaking at the meeting, the BBC reported.

However, the latest resolution does not call for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas but is calling to “create the conditions” for one.

Speaking at the meeting, UN chief António Guterres, said the major hindrance to delivering aid to Gaza is Israel’s offensive. “A humanitarian ceasefire is the only way to begin to meet the desperate needs of people in Gaza and end their ongoing nightmare,” Mr Guterres added.
