A devastating fire at a hospital in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, Indian, has killed 10 newborns, leaving families and workers in shock.

BBC reported that officials noted that the blaze, which broke out late on Friday in the neonatal ward of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College Hospital, was believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.

BBC reports that officials said quick action by hospital workers saved 44 infants, but 16 remain in critical condition.

Heartbroken parents gathered outside the hospital, waiting anxiously for updates on their children.

Authorities suspected the fire might have started due to a short circuit or a malfunction in a machine used to regulate oxygen levels in the ward.

Investigations were underway to determine the exact cause of the tragedy, which occurred around 10:30 pm local time.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “heart-wrenching” in a statement, expressing condolences to the families affected.

“I pray for strength for those who have lost their innocent children,” he said.

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced compensation of 500,000 rupees (£4,600; $5,900) for each grieving family.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak revealed that the hospital had undergone a safety review earlier this year, with a fire drill conducted in June.
