HYPREP begins new Ogoni projects

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project has announced the commencement of a new phase of shoreline clean-up, mangrove restoration, water supply, and livelihood support projects aimed at sustaining momentum in the implementation of the Ogoni clean-up.
HYPREP project coordinator, Nenibarini Zabbey, disclosed this in a statement after the first quarterly meeting of key regulators and asset owners, organised by HYPREP in Port Harcourt.
He also announced the launch of a socio-economic study of Ogoniland and the award of a contract to the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the WHO to conduct a three-year human health biomonitoring programme in the area.
“Projects such as the Ogoni Power Project, Buan Cottage Hospital, the Ogoni Specialist Hospital, among others, will also be delivered within specified timelines for commissioning and eventual community use,” the project coordinator stated.
Once completed, he assured that the Ogoni Specialist Hospital would be equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities, including a modern MRI machine, reflecting HYPREP’s commitment to providing quality healthcare as a key component of its public health intervention in Ogoniland.
Mr Zabbey praised stakeholders for their technical, professional, and administrative contributions, which he outlined as vital to the success of the Ogoni Clean-up across its thematic areas.
He commended regulators and asset owners for their pivotal roles in improving clean-up and accelerating several projects.
While acknowledging the expectations of the Ogoni people and the wider Nigerian public, Mr Zabbey urged regulators and asset owners to remain committed to supporting HYPREP’s efforts by deepening their involvement and strategic engagement.
He noted that HYPREP’s work requires ongoing engagement with key stakeholders, including regulators, asset owners, civil society groups, and relevant government agencies at both federal and state levels.
