Heavy rains in southern Japan kill six, cause widespread damage

Days of heavy rain in south-western Japan have killed at least six people and caused widespread damage to houses and infrastructure.
Japanese media reported on Tuesday that there has been an ongoing search for three people in Saga and Oita prefectures, about 100km from Nagasaki on the south-western main island of Kyushu.
Rivers burst their banks, and landslides were reported in several places.
Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate their homes to seek safety.
In some areas, residents have returned to begin cleaning up mud-filled streets and severely damaged houses.
