Group seeks immediate action against illegal mining in Bauchi community

The Gada Biyu community in the Bauchi metropolis has called for the government’s immediate action to regulate mining operations in the area.
The residents made the call on Friday in Bauchi, during a protest led by ‘Media Advocacy on Climate Change Initiative’ over the unregulated mining activities in the community.
Jilima Bishari, who spoke on behalf of the protesters, highlighted the devastating impact of mining on women and children, including pollution, contamination of water, harm to livestock including child labour
She said, “We are calling for rigorous enforcement of state mining laws to safeguard the well-being of women and children as well as immediate action to stop the exploitation of vulnerable groups, including minors. There is also an urgent need for a sustainable approach considering the health and safety of those living near mines, and action to address severe environmental damage and health risks posed by mining companies.”
Responding, Director of Mines and Surveillance, Federal Ministry of Mines, Bauchi office, Tukur Ibrahim, explained that the ministry was responsible for regulating mining activities in Nigeria
Mr Ibrahim said that the ministry aimed to exploit the nation’s mineral endowments in an environmentally sustainable manner and establish a vibrant minerals and metals industry.
He assured that an assessment would be conducted on the mining activities in the community.
