Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara donated N100 million and 10,000 bags of assorted grains to flood victims in the Gummi Local Government Area on Saturday.

The governor announced the donation when he paid a sympathy visit to Gummi over the recent flood in the area.

“I am happy to announce the donation of N100 million, 10,000 bags of rice and maise to the victims,” he said.

The governor had earlier sympathised with the emir of Gummi, Lawal Hassan, over the flood incident.

The governor also visited the Gayari community on the outskirts of Gummi town and sympathised with the victims.

Mr Lawal, while addressing some of the flood victims, said, “Today, I have come to Gummi to also sympathise with the good people of Gummi over what happened as a result of the flood.

“This is worrisome, the way our people were rendered homeless as a result of the flood.”

The governor recalled that when the incident occurred, he sent a committee headed by Salisu Maibuhu to assess the damage level and his deputy to sympathise with the community.

He called on the people of Gummi to be patient and consider the disaster an act from God Almighty.

The governor also said the state government would allocate land to the victims to reconstruct new houses.

“My administration will construct new drainages in this area in order to prevent the future recurrence of a similar disaster,” the governor said.

Earlier, Aminu Nuhu, the sole administrator of the Gummi Local Government Council, commended the governor for the visit.

The executive secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (ZEMA), Ahmed Bala, recently said the incident affected 9,784 households in all the 12 political wards in the area.

Mr Bala said 12 persons lost their lives to the flood, while hundreds of hectares of farmlands were washed away.
