Gov. Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has called on the federal government to provide assistance to flood victims in Tangaza and Illela Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

Mr Aliyu made the appeal on Wednesday when he visited the two worse-hit council areas to assess the level of destruction caused by the recent flooding.

He said that while this year’s flooding affected 22 LGAs in the state, Tangaza and Illela suffered the most damage.

“The devastation caused by this flood is extensive, with hundreds of houses and farmlands destroyed, leaving many people homeless.

“The flood has also wiped out large areas of farmlands, raising concerns about food shortage in these communities,” the governor said.

He appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in order to alleviate the suffering of the residents of the affected communities.

“I appeal to our president, a leader known for his responsiveness, to come to the aid of these two LGAs so they can find some relief from this terrible situation,” Aliyu said.

He underscored the importance of support for Tangaza and Illela, given their economic significance as border communities with Niger Republic.

He said, “These two communities are at risk of severe food shortage and economic crisis due to the magnitude of the flooding.”

He also urged local residents to keep their drains clear and avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially into the gutters.

He asked the affected communities to see the disaster as an act of God while praying for protection against a recurrence.
