The Federal University of Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) on Saturday defeated Lagos State University (LASU) 1-0 to win the bronze medal in football at the 11th All Africa University Games (FASU).

The FUOYE  boys, who lost 2-1 to LASU in the group stage of the competition, played with much determination to triumph in the third-place play-off.

FUOYE’s Kelani Oni outpaced the defence of LASU to find the opponent’s net in the 30th minute.

With the goal, FUOYE kept a disciplined defence line and did not allow the host university free-flow football until the end of the first half.

The second half also saw FUOYE maintain a good grip on the ball, frustrating every LASU attack and all attempts they initiated to get back into the game.

FUOYE held on to their loan goal till the end of the match, getting the bronze in the bag and an additional reward of N200,000.

The head coach of LASU, Ramon Arubiewe, told journalists that his team was hit with injuries and could not perform well.

“We had a number of our players playing with injuries; this affected our ability to fight hard for the bronze medal.

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, this was just not our match to win,” Arubiewe said.

Similarly, the head coach of FUOYE, Blessing Ayodeji-Ojo, told journalists that his team played with determination and passion to win the bronze medal.
