Expert urges technology-driven security to protect Nigerians

A security expert, Dr Charles Omole, has urged the Federal Government to keep exploring and harnessing technology for effective security and protection of Nigerian lives and property.
Mr Omole gave the advice while speaking at the 17th Distinguished Public Lecture hosted by the Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State, on Friday.
He delivered a lecture on ‘Strengthening National Development Through Effective Security in Nigeria,’ and expressed satisfaction with the shift from analogue to digital security operations.
He said, “Smart surveillance, data-driven policing, and cybersecurity can help mitigate threats before they escalate – including resource control issues, banditry, kidnapping, and cybercrime.’’
He noted that Nigeria’s sustainable development depends on a comprehensive strategy for tackling security challenges and ensuring long-term national stability.
Mr Omole stressed that institutional reform was essential, as corruption and inefficiency continue to weaken Nigeria’s security architecture and overall governance.
He stated, “Good governance must go beyond talk, to include transparency, rule of law, and accountability that drive real national progress.’’
He highlighted the importance of social cohesion, noting that unity strengthens national resistance to insecurity, while division leaves society vulnerable to persistent threats.
“This calls for investment in education, economic opportunity, and programmes that bridge ethnic and religious divides,” Mr Omole added.
He said that true security was not only about confronting threats, but about building a society where people live, work, and invest without fear.
He stated, “Security is the silent backbone of prosperity – the quiet force behind every successful development story. As Nigeria looks ahead, it must remember: a secure nation protects both its borders and the dreams of its people.’’
In his remarks, Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, stressed the call for prioritising security as key to national development.
Mr Dantawaye said that security provides a stable foundation for economic growth, investment, and the overall well-being of citizens across the country.
He noted that better security leads to higher living standards, as people could work, build, and grow without constant fear of violence.
He urged the public to support and collaborate with police and other security agencies to foster a safe and investment-friendly environment.
