Enugu smart green school initiative is 100-year, N260 billion investment project: Gov Mbah

The Enugu government says the newly introduced smart green school projects will be fully operational in September 2025 across the 260 political wards.
The education commissioner, Ndubueze Mbah, said this on Tuesday in Enugu.
The commissioner said that a pilot study of the smart school was done in Owo, Nkanu East LGA, with 840 pupils and junior secondary school students already enrolled in the school.
Mr Mbah said the pilot school would be replicated in all 260 wards of the 17 LGAs.
According to him, the smart green school is a 100-year and N1 billion investment project. Each school will have 25 inclusive classrooms, internet facilities, a solar power system, medical facilities, and quarters for 40 teachers and other personnel.
“There will also be a smart farm in the school so that children will understand that agriculture is critical to sustainable development. In fact, agriculture is a pillar of the smart green school.
“The smart farm is critical because it is a part of experiential learning. We want our children to understand where the food that ends up on their plates comes from, and we want to change the psyche of Enugu citizens when it comes to agriculture,” he said.
The commissioner added, “Smart School is a revolution because the government has ground support from the United Nations Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) and other donor agencies. It will redesign education development in Enugu state with artificial intelligence and mechatronics.
“By September 2025, about 135 smart schools will take off. Each smart green school is a N1 billion investment in the world if fully equipped and functional. It includes 25 inclusive smart classrooms fully equipped and furnished.”
The commissioner said that the state government was building a centre at the Enugu College of Education, Technical, to train and produce smart teachers for the state and export to other states and parts of the world.
“We have a creativity hub where they use coding and robotics to generate modules for industries; we have a mechatronics hub where they learn both traditional and emergent technologies, and all of these are provisions in the pilot Enugu Smart School in Owoh,” he explained.
The commissioner disclosed that Vice-President Kashim Shettima would inaugurate the pilot smart school in Owo on June 4.
