Emmy Awards (Full List): Shōgun sets new record

Shōgun led the drama category with 25 nominations, closely followed by FX’s ‘The Bear’, which received 23 nominations.

• September 16, 2024

FX’s ‘Shōgun’ made history at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, setting a new record by winning 18 Emmys across various categories, surpassing Game of Thrones’ previous tally.

This feat includes 14 wins from the Creative Arts Emmys and four from the Primetime ceremony itself. Key accolades included Outstanding Drama Series, while Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai claimed the lead actor and lead actress in a drama series, respectively. Frederick E.O. Toye was also recognised for best directing for a drama series.

Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, Shōgun is set in 1600 Japan, where Lord Yoshii Toranaga finds himself in a life-and-death struggle as his enemies unite against him. Meanwhile, the discovery of a mysterious European ship stranded in a nearby village adds to the tension.

The 76th Primetime Emmys were hosted by father-son duo Dan and Eugene Levy, stars of Schitt’s Creek, and took place at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.

This year, Shōgun led the drama category with 25 nominations, closely followed by FX’s ‘The Bear’, which received 23 nominations.

‘The Bear’ also broke its own record for the most awards won by a comedy series in a single year with 11 wins. A standout achievement included Liza Colón-Zayas earning her first Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
