Edo University, Uzairue, has mandated a year industrial training for students in chemical and mechanical engineering to acquire skills on conversion of fuel vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

Acting Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Dawood O. Egbefo, disclosed this during the flag off of the initiative.

The vice chancellor, in a statement by the university on Sunday in Benin, said the move was to reduce the burden of fuel cost, increased access to affordable transportation, job creation and economic growth.

Mr Egbefo stated that the programme would also reduce carbon emissions, alleviate poverty, which aligned with the vision of the visitor to the university, Gov. Godwin Obaseki.

According to him, the development is in partnership with the Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company (NIPCO), the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and the Edo ministry of mining and energy.

“We are confident this strategic partnership will yield lasting benefits for our communities, the nation, and pave the way for a more sustainable future.

“The initiative demonstrates the university’s commitment to innovation, social responsibility, collaboration with government and industry partners.

“This and many more innovations we offer, is why Edo University is the best destination for students striving for academic excellence.

“We don’t go on strike. The university is open for everyone for academic pursuit. Our needs and expectations are met before we request,” he said.
