The Delta command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called for better support for road traffic crash (RTC) victims and their families.

Frederick Ogidan, sector commander of FRSC in Delta, made the call on Saturday at the visitation of accident victims at the Asaba Specialist Hospital in commemoration of the 2024 World Day of Remembrance for RTC Victims.

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is a week-long programme observed every third Sunday of November to pay homage to those who died in road traffic crashes.

The day is also set aside to advocate better support for victims and bereaved families and to promote action to save lives.

“It is important to acknowledge the crucial work of emergency services, draw attention to the generally trivial legal response to culpable road deaths and injuries and advocate for an appropriately serious response.

“It was also important to promote evidence-based actions to prevent and eventually stop further road traffic deaths and injuries.

“The remembrance of RTC victims is an annual event in line with the Resolutions of the African Union Executive Council and the United Nations,” he said.

Mr Ogidan urged Nigerians to download the FRSC mobile app on their phones as it comes in handy and has several user-friendly features.

The state coordinator of special marshals, Kennedy Idolor, urged motorists, pedestrians and all road users to recognise the fact that road traffic crashes kill more passengers than drivers.

He also urged Nigerians to remember that road safety is a collective responsibility.

“Please obey all traffic rules and ensure safety, especially during the end of the year yuletides, as we advocate for attitudinal change for all drivers, tricyclists, cyclists and the public,” he added.
