Death toll hits 64 in Spain’s high-speed passenger train collision

Death toll from two high-speed trains collision in Spain on Wednesday has risen to 64, with over 80 people injured, local authorities said.
Castilla-La Mancha’s regional government confirmed the death toll to the media.
Toledo’s train collision is the third rail disaster in Spain in 2026, following two high-speed train collisions near Adamuz in January and another in southern Spain’s Córdoba province, which killed over 40 people.
However, death toll from Wednesday’s crash is now close to 2013 train crash at Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain in which about 80 people were killed.
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed sadness over the incident and offered condolences to the victims’ families.
“Shocked by the serious train accident in Toledo,” Mr Sanchez said. “I remain in constant contact with the Minister of Transport, @oscar_puente_, and with the president of Castilla-La Mancha, @garciapage.”
Mr Sanchez said emergency services were working to assist those affected and ensure their safety.
