Court dissolves Islamic marriage for lack of love and care

An Area Court sitting at Centre-Igboro, Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday dissolved the Islamic marriage between Fatimah Salihu and Suleiman Olarongbe at the request of the wife.
Presiding Judge, Toyin Aluko, granted the divorce following Salihu’s petition and the deliberate absence of the respondent in court.
Aluko stated that the defendant had been duly served a civil summons.
“On May 6, an affidavit of service of summons was issued and delivered to the defendant. However, he failed to appear in court and provided no representation or explanation for his absence,” the judge said.
Citing the law, the judge noted that proceedings could continue in such circumstances.
Consequently, the court dissolved the Islamic marriage and ordered the wife to observe a three-month iddah (waiting period) before she could remarry.
A copy of the court’s ruling will be delivered to the defendant.
Earlier, Salihu told the court that she and her husband had been separated for the past 10 years due to lack of love and care.
She pleaded for the court to grant her divorce so she could move on with her life.
