Civil servant in court for allegedly defrauding accommodation seeker

The police on Thursday arraigned a 48-year-old civil servant, Sunny Ubi, in a Senior magistrates` court, Karu, Abuja for alleged criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The defendant was charged with criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal misappropriation.
He, however, denied committing the offence.
The Prosecution Counsel, Ayotunde Adeyanju, told the court that the complainant, Ojo Etudaye, of Karu Village, FCT, reported the matter at Karu Police Station on October 7.
According to Adeyanju, the complainant on August 3 entrusted the sum of N148,000 to the defendant to assist him in renting a self-contained apartment.
He said that the complainant gave the defendant the money not bearing in mind that the defendant had an intention to cheat.
He said that the defendant dishonestly converted the said money to his own personal use, adding that upon police interrogation he confessed to the crime.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 312, 322 and 309 of the Penal Code.
The Magistrate, Inna Shettima admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with one surety in like sum.
She ordered that the sureties must reside in a verifiable address within the jurisdiction of the court and adjourned the case until November 20, for hearing.
