Former President Barack Obama has endorsed U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic presidential candidate for the November 5 election.

In a statement on Thursday, Mr Obama said he and his wife, Michelle, would “do everything we can to elect Kamala Harris the next president of the United States.”

Mr Obama’s endorsement boosts support for Ms Harris to be the Democratic presidential flag bearer in the November election.

“It means so much to have your endorsements, @MichelleObama and @BarackObama,” Ms Harris said in a tweet on Friday.

Ms Harris, 59, as of Monday had garnered enough delegates to clinch Democrats presidential nomination just 24 hour after she was endorsed by President Joe Biden, who dropped out of the race.

Ms Harris’ nomination sets her up for a contest against the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump, 78.
