Zulum seeks stronger military operations around Lake Chad

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno has urged the Nigerian Army to intensify military operations around the Lake Chad region to eliminate insurgents threatening communities in northern Borno.
Mr Zulum made the call when the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, paid him a courtesy visit on Saturday in Maiduguri.
The governor said that recent attacks in parts of northern Borno underscored the need for sustained military operations along the shores of Lake Chad and in the Tumbuns to restore lasting peace.
He appealed to the COAS to expedite the commencement of Operation Lafiya Sanity and strengthen the amphibious command in Baga to clear waterways and maintain security in liberated communities.
Mr Zulum stressed that military clearance operations must be followed by effective stabilisation measures, including reconstruction, rehabilitation and resettlement, to enable displaced residents to return home safely.
He also called for the establishment of military formations in Kareto, Sabongari and the Wajiroko axis of Damboa Local Government Area to address security threats and facilitate movement between Maiduguri, Damboa and Biu.
The governor commended the Army for training and deploying 1,000 forest guards to Borno, assuring that the state government would work with military authorities to ensure their effective deployment.
He further acknowledged the deployment of additional battalions to the state, describing their presence as crucial to improving security across the operational sectors.
Mr Zulum, however, urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, noting that despite recent attacks, significant progress had been recorded in restoring peace in several communities.
He commended Mr Shaibu and troops of Operation Hadin Kai for their sacrifices, while praying for the repose of the souls of fallen soldiers and comfort for their families.
Earlier, Mr Shaibu thanked the governor for his continued support, assuring him that the Army would address operational challenges and encourage commanders and troops to remain committed to their mandate.
The COAS said that the military would sustain efforts to improve operational effectiveness and consolidate security gains across Borno.
