Xmas: Police chief warns officers against extortion, brutality

The police commissioner in Enugu, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has cautioned cops against misconduct while ensuring public security and safety during the festive period.
The commissioner gave the warning on Saturday during a meeting with his management team and other supervisory officers at the Senior Police Officers Mess in Enugu.
Mr Uzuegbu also ordered them to devise strategies for successful policing while ensuring public security and safety within their areas of responsibility.
He emphasised the need for maximum security for residents and travellers during the festive period and beyond, stressing that the security and safety of the public “is paramount and non-negotiable.”
The police boss urged the officers to remain focused and active.
“It is your responsibility to ensure no lapses are recorded in your respective jurisdictions of operation,” he said.
The commissioner advised the officers to ensure that their personnel uphold the highest standards of professionalism, warning them of the dangers of vicarious liability should the personnel under them be found wanting.
Mr Uzuegbu clarified that all forms of extortion, harassment and brutality would not be tolerated.
“Such misconducts bring unnecessary embarrassment to the Command and will not be condoned,” he said.
He reassured the residents of the command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all in Enugu.
He also called on residents to remain law-abiding, stay security-conscious and continue providing actionable security information and intelligence to assist the police in maintaining peace and security.
