About 3,300 people have been told to evacuate their homes on Thursday in the eastern German city of Dresden.

The order to vacate the area was because of the discovery of a World War II-era bomb, according to police.

Police were moving through the area with loudspeakers to alert people about the plans to defuse the bomb.

Emergency shelters had been put in place, though they were asking that people only head to the shelters if they had no other option for temporary housing.

The 250-kilogramme bomb was discovered on Wednesday during construction work in the area.

The defusing attempt was planned for later on Thursday.
